2013 Subaru Legacy Smart Key Remote Fob Programming Instructions

Important Notice: The 2013 Subaru Legacy features a keyless entry system with a built-in code learning function that allows you to program new remote fobs or remove old ones. The system can store up to four transmitter codes, which may be identical or unique. Each remote fob includes an 8-digit identification number that must be entered during programming. This code is printed on the original packaging and also located on the remote’s circuit board. If the packaging is missing, carefully open the remote to locate the code.

Programming a New Remote

  • Step 1: Sit in the driver’s seat and ensure that all doors, the trunk, and rear gate are fully closed.
  • Step 2: Open and close the driver’s door once.
  • Step 3: Within 45 seconds, open and close the driver’s door again.
  • Step 4: Insert the key into the ignition. Turn it from the LOCK position to the ON position (do not start the engine) 10 times within 15 seconds. After the tenth turn, the system will emit a single electronic tone, followed by a continuous buzzer, and the interior lights will begin flashing. This indicates that the system has entered programming mode. If no tone or lights activate, restart the process from Step 3.
  • Step 5: Within 45 seconds, open and close the driver’s door one more time. A 30-second confirmation tone will sound. If this tone does not activate, return to Step 3 and begin again. Entering the 8-Digit Remote Code
  • Step 6: While the tone is still active, enter the 8-digit code using the power door lock switch on the driver’s door: Press the LOCK button the number of times that corresponds to the first digit. Then press the UNLOCK button once to move to the next digit. Repeat this for all 8 digits of the code. After the final digit, press UNLOCK once more to confirm the full entry.
  • Step 7: Immediately repeat the entire 8-digit sequence a second time using the same method. If both entries match, a second 30-second confirmation tone will sound. If they do not match, or if more than five seconds elapse between button presses, the system will cancel the process. Restart from Step 5. If you encounter six entry errors, return to Step 3 and begin again. Programming Additional Remotes
  • Step 8: To add another remote (up to four total), repeat Steps 4 through 7 for each additional remote.
  • Step 9: Once all remotes have been programmed, remove the key from the ignition. The system will automatically exit programming mode.
  • Step 10: Test each remote to ensure that lock, unlock, and other functions operate as expected. Removing Lost or Old Remote Codes If a remote has been lost, its code will remain stored in the system. For security purposes, you should overwrite all stored codes using your current remotes. To clear out unused codes: If you have one remote, program it four times. If you have two remotes, program each twice. If you have three remotes, program one twice and the other two once each. This process ensures that only your current remotes are active in the system’s memory.

Security Reminder:

  • During programming, make sure no one else is using a remote near your vehicle. If another remote signal is detected during the procedure, it could be mistakenly programmed into your system.
