2013 Subaru Outback Keyless Entry Remote Fob Programming
Instructions For Vehicles with Remotehead Key Important Overview: The 2013 Outback models equipped with Remotehead Keys use a code registration system to add or delete transmitters. The system can hold up to four unique transmitter codes. Each remote must be programmed by entering its 8-digit identification code, which can be found on a label inside the remote or its original packaging.
Programming Procedure for Remotehead Key:
- Step 1: Sit in the driver’s seat and ensure all doors, trunk, and rear gate are completely closed.
- Step 2: Open and close the driver's door once.
- Step 3: Within 45 seconds, open and close the driver's door again.
- Step 4: Insert the key into the ignition. Turn the key from LOCK to ON (dash lights on, do not start the engine), then back to LOCK—10 times within 15 seconds. If successful, you will hear a single tone, followed by a continuous buzzer, and the interior lights will flash. If no indicators activate, return to Step 3 and repeat the process.
- Step 5: Within 45 seconds, open and close the driver’s door again. A 30-second programming tone will begin. Entering the 8-Digit Remote Code
- Step 6: Use the power door lock switch on the driver’s door to input your 8-digit code: Press the LOCK button the number of times matching the first digit. Press UNLOCK once to move to the next digit. Repeat for all eight digits. After the last digit, press UNLOCK once to confirm the first full entry.
- Step 7: Re-enter the entire 8-digit code using the same process. Press UNLOCK again after the final digit. A confirmation tone will sound for 30 seconds if both entries match. If no tone occurs or if you wait more than five seconds between inputs, the system will exit programming. Start again from Step 4. Programming Additional Remotes
- Step 8: If you have more remotes to program, repeat Steps 4–7 for each. Finalizing the Process
- Step 9: Once finished, remove the key from the ignition. The system exits programming mode automatically.
- Step 10: Test each programmed remote to ensure it properly locks and unlocks the vehicle. Clearing Previously Stored Remotes To delete old transmitter codes: Program four transmitters to overwrite all stored memory. If you have only one transmitter, program it four times. For two remotes, program each one twice. With three, program two once and the third twice. This ensures only your current remotes remain stored in the system. Do not perform this process near other vehicles or remotes. If another signal is received during programming, it may be stored unintentionally.
For Vehicles with Smart Key System Important Notice: The 2013 Subaru Outback equipped with a Smart Key system does not support onboard programming. Remote fob registration must be completed using advanced diagnostic equipment. Smart Key Programming Procedure
- Step 1: Contact a qualified automotive technician or dealer with the proper equipment to perform smart key programming.
- Step 2: If the vehicle is drivable, bringing it to the technician may reduce service costs compared to mobile assistance.
- Step 3: The technician will use diagnostic tools to link the new smart key to the vehicle’s system and verify successful synchronization.
