2013 Toyota Prius Plug-In Smart Key Programming Instructions Keyless Entry Remote Fob

Step-by-Step Guide Important Notice: The 2013 Prius Plug-In Hybrid is equipped with a Smart Key System and cannot be programmed using onboard procedures. Adding or replacing a smart key requires advanced diagnostic tools that interface with the vehicle's immobilizer and electronic control modules.

Programming Procedure:

  • Step 1: Ensure the vehicle is parked, the ignition is OFF, and all doors are fully closed. Move any existing key fobs at least a few feet away from the vehicle to prevent interference during setup.
  • Step 2: Connect a Toyota-compatible scan tool or key programming device to the OBD-II diagnostic port under the driver’s side dashboard.
  • Step 3: Activate the diagnostic tool and navigate to the Smart Key / Immobilizer section. Begin the key registration or replacement process as instructed by the software.
  • Step 4: If a working key is present, you may be asked to authenticate it by placing it close to the START/STOP button. The system will then verify and authorize access to add a new key.
  • Step 5: Follow the prompts to either add a key (if one is present) or register a new key (if all keys are lost). The vehicle's control module will enter a registration state for the new smart fob.
  • Step 6: Hold the new smart key near the START/STOP button or place it in the backup slot (if prompted). The system will detect the new fob and begin pairing.
  • Step 7: Once the pairing process is complete, wait for confirmation on the programming device indicating that the key has been successfully registered.
  • Step 8: Disconnect the scan tool from the vehicle’s OBD-II port and allow the system to reset. This may take 30–60 seconds.
  • Step 9: Test the newly programmed smart key to ensure it can: Lock and unlock the doors remotely Start the engine using the push-button ignition Activate the smart entry system by proximity

Additional Information:

The 2013 Prius Plug-In supports up to five registered smart keys. If all keys are lost, a smart system reset may be required, which can take additional time. Always store at least one backup key in a secure location outside the vehicle. The smart key contains an emergency mechanical key inside the fob that can be used to unlock the driver’s door if the battery is depleted.
