2013 Toyota Tacoma Smart Key Remote Fob Programming Guide

Important Note: This procedure is intended for vehicles equipped with a factory-installed keyless entry system. The process must be followed precisely, and timing is critical. If any step is delayed, the vehicle may exit programming mode, requiring a restart of the procedure from the beginning.

Programming Procedure

  • Step 1: Prepare the Vehicle Ensure the key is removed from the ignition. The driver’s door should be open and unlocked. All other doors must remain closed during the programming sequence.
  • Step 2: Insert Key – Complete Within 5 Seconds A. Insert the key into the ignition (do not turn it), then remove it. B. Repeat: insert the key into the ignition again (do not turn it), then remove it. Both insertions must be completed within five seconds.
  • Step 3: Perform Door Cycling – Complete Within 40 Seconds A. Close and then reopen the driver’s door. B. Repeat: close and reopen the driver’s door again. C. Insert the key into the ignition (do not turn), then remove it once more.
  • Step 4: Final Setup – Complete Within 40 Seconds A. Close and reopen the driver’s door again. B. Repeat: close and reopen the door a second time. C. Insert the key into the ignition and leave it in place. D. Close the driver’s door completely. E. Turn the ignition to the ON position (do not start the engine), then back to OFF. F. Remove the key from the ignition.
  • Step 5: Confirm Programming Mode Within 3 seconds of removing the key: The door locks should automatically lock and then unlock once. This confirms that the vehicle has successfully entered programming mode. If the locks do not cycle, repeat the entire procedure starting from Step 1. Programming Remote Transmitters
  • Step 6: Program the Remote – Complete Within 40 Seconds Per Remote A. Press and hold the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons on the remote at the same time for 1.5 seconds. B. Release both buttons, then press and hold the LOCK button by itself for 2 seconds. C. The door locks should lock and unlock once within 3 seconds, confirming that the remote has been successfully programmed. If the locks cycle twice, the remote was not accepted. Repeat this step for that remote.
  • Step 7: Program Additional Remotes (if needed) Repeat Step 6 for each additional remote you wish to register. You may program up to four remotes during a single session.
  • Step 8: Exit Programming Mode To exit programming mode, open the driver’s door. The system will return to normal operation and all successfully programmed remotes will be active.
  • Final Steps Step 9: Test All Remotes Stand outside the vehicle and test each remote: Confirm that lock and unlock functions are working. Test any additional features such as panic or tailgate release if your system supports them.
