2013 Toyota Tundra Smart Key Remote Fob Programming Guide

Important Notice: The 2013 Toyota Tundra does not support onboard programming for remote key fobs or smart keys. All programming must be completed using manufacturer-grade diagnostic equipment by a trained automotive technician. There is no manual or self-programming method available for this model year.

Programming Requirements

  • Step 1: Identify the Type of Key System Your Tundra may use one of the following key types: Remote Head Key: A traditional metal key with integrated lock/unlock buttons. Smart Key Fob: A proximity-based key used with push-button start ignition systems. Both require specialized tools to pair with the vehicle's control systems.
  • Step 2: Schedule Service with an Automotive Technician A professional technician will use a diagnostic scan tool to connect to the vehicle’s onboard systems via the OBD-II port. The tool interfaces with the Body Control Module (BCM) and the Immobilizer ECU to register the new fob. This ensures that the new key can control both the door locks and the engine start system (if equipped).
  • Step 3: Prepare for Programming To ensure a smooth programming session: Bring all current remotes that you wish to continue using. During programming, the system may erase all previous remotes, so all active fobs must be present. Have proof of vehicle ownership ready, such as a registration document or vehicle title, especially if no functional key is available. Install a new battery in the remote you plan to program. A weak battery can cause the pairing to fail or result in incomplete functionality.

Additional Considerations Maximum Remote Limit:

The system typically supports up to four programmed remotes. If this limit is reached, an old remote must be deleted before adding a new one. All Keys Lost? If no working remotes are available, the technician may need to perform a security reset or additional authorization steps. Compatibility: These instructions apply only to Tundras equipped with the factory keyless entry system. Aftermarket systems require different procedures. Post-Programming Check: After programming, test all remote functions including lock, unlock, panic alarm, and (if applicable) push-button start.
