Programming a Smart Key Remote for 2014 Lincoln MKX

Important: This procedure allows you to program an additional smart key using the vehicle’s onboard system. To complete the process, two valid smart keys must be present inside the vehicle. A total of four smart keys can be stored by the system. If fewer than two working keys are available, this method will not work. Ensure the ignition is turned off. Make sure all doors are fully closed and remain closed during the process. All steps must be completed within 30 seconds once the sequence begins. If a step is missed or performed incorrectly, wait at least one minute before restarting. Read the entire process before beginning.

Smart Key Programming Steps:

  • Step 1: Ensure the vehicle is turned off and all doors are shut. Place both existing programmed smart keys inside the vehicle.
  • Step 2: Take the new, unprogrammed smart key and insert it into the backup slot located inside the center console. Make sure the buttons face downward.
  • Step 3: Locate the door unlock control on the driver or front passenger door. Press the unlock button three times.
  • Step 4: Press and release the brake pedal once.
  • Step 5: Now press the lock button on the same door panel three times.
  • Step 6: Press and release the brake pedal once more. At this point, the indicator light on the Start/Stop button should flash rapidly. This confirms the system has detected the two existing keys and is now in programming mode.
  • Step 7: Within one minute, press the Start/Stop button once to register the new smart key. If the system already has four keys programmed, a message such as “Maximum Number of Keys Learned” will appear on the dashboard.
  • Step 8: Remove the new smart key from the console slot.
  • Step 9: Press the unlock button on the newly added key. This exits programming mode and confirms the key has been successfully programmed.
  • Step 10: Test the new smart key: Press lock and then unlock to verify remote entry. Attempt to start the vehicle using the new key to confirm it is fully functional.
