2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Smart Key Remote Fob Programming Instructions

Important Notice: The 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek uses a push-to-start Smart Key system that does not allow manual or onboard programming. All remote fobs must be programmed using dealership-level tools by a qualified automotive technician.

Programming Procedure (Requires Diagnostic Equipment)

  • Step 1: Confirm that the replacement Smart Key is compatible with the 2014 XV Crosstrek. Ensure the FCC ID, frequency, and button layout match the original remote.
  • Step 2: Schedule service with a professional equipped with Subaru-specific diagnostic tools such as a Subaru Select Monitor or equivalent scan tool capable of key registration.
  • Step 3: Drive the vehicle to the service provider’s location if possible. If the vehicle is not operable, you may need to arrange for towing or mobile programming services.
  • Step 4: The technician will connect a scan tool to the vehicle’s OBD-II port and access the Keyless Access System module via the Body Control Module.
  • Step 5: With the vehicle in programming mode, the technician will follow the software prompts to register the new Smart Key. This includes: Assigning a unique electronic ID to the vehicle Verifying communication between the Smart Key and vehicle receiver system
  • Step 6: If any previous Smart Keys are lost or compromised, the technician can remove them from memory during the same session to ensure they are no longer able to access the vehicle.
  • Step 7: A maximum of four Smart Keys can be stored in the system. All fobs you intend to keep active must be present during the registration process.
  • Step 8: The technician will test all Smart Key functions, including: Lock and unlock buttons Passive entry Push-button ignition Trunk or hatch release

Additional Considerations:

  • Install a fresh battery in the new fob prior to programming to avoid communication errors. Keep all Smart Keys inside the vehicle during programming to prevent any from being accidentally deactivated. Once programming is complete, verify that all fobs function properly before leaving the service facility.
