Programming Guide for 2016 Smart Keyless Entry Remote Fob – CTS
(Smart Key System Only)
Important Information Before You Begin: All transmitters to be programmed must be present during the procedure. Ensure the vehicle is fully powered off before starting. In Canada, two recognized transmitters are required to program a new one. A maximum of eight remote fobs can be stored in the system. These procedures apply only to vehicles equipped with a Smart Key system.
Programming With a Recognized Transmitter: Use this procedure if at least one previously programmed remote is available.
- Step 1: Confirm that the vehicle is off, and gather all remotes.
- Step 2: Remove the mechanical key from the functioning remote.
- Step 3: Place the recognized transmitter into the front cupholder.
- Step 4: Remove the cap covering the key lock cylinder on the driver’s door handle.
- Step 5: Insert the key and turn it to the unlock position five times within 10 seconds.
- Step 6: The Driver Information Center (DIC) will show: “Ready for Remote #2, 3, 4, etc.”
- Step 7: Open the center console storage area and remove the rubber liner to expose the transmitter pocket.
- Step 8: Insert the new remote into the pocket with the buttons facing forward.
- Step 9: Press the ENGINE START/STOP button. When accepted, the DIC will display readiness for the next transmitter.
- Step 10: Remove the programmed remote and press unlock or lock to confirm it functions.
- Step 11: Repeat Steps 8–10 for each additional remote.
- Step 12: After programming all remotes, press and hold the ENGINE START/STOP button for approximately 12 seconds to exit programming mode.
- Step 13: Reinsert the mechanical key into its original transmitter body.
Programming Without a Recognized Transmitter: Use this method if no working remotes are available. This will allow the system to accept up to eight new transmitters.
Important Notes: This method requires three security delay cycles, each lasting about 10 minutes. Not supported for vehicles sold in Canada. All remotes must be on hand during the procedure.
- Step 1: Ensure the vehicle is completely powered off.
- Step 2: Remove the mechanical key from the new transmitter.
- Step 3: Remove the cap covering the driver door key lock cylinder.
- Step 4: Insert the key and turn it to the unlock position five times within 10 seconds.
- Step 5: The DIC will display: “Remote Learn Pending, Please Wait.”
- Step 6: Wait approximately 10 minutes until the display reads: “Press Engine Start Button to Learn.”
- Step 7: Press the ENGINE START/STOP button. The DIC will again show “Remote Learn Pending, Please Wait.”
- Step 8: Repeat Steps 6 and 7 two additional times (three 10-minute cycles total).
- Step 9: After the third cycle, the DIC will display: “Ready for Remote #1.” (At this point, all previously stored remotes will be erased.)
- Step 10: Open the center console and remove the rubber mat to reveal the transmitter pocket.
- Step 11: Insert the new remote into the pocket with the buttons facing forward.
- Step 12: Press the ENGINE START/STOP button. The DIC will confirm the remote is accepted.
- Step 13: Remove the transmitter and press unlock or lock to ensure it is programmed.
- Step 14: To add additional remotes, repeat Steps 11–13 for each one.
- Step 15: When finished, press and hold the ENGINE START/STOP button for about 12 seconds to exit programming mode.
- Step 16: Reinsert the mechanical key into its transmitter.
