2016 Mitsubishi Outlander – Keyless Remote and Smart Key Programming Instructions
Standard Ignition Key or Remote Head Key – Programming for Engine Start This procedure enables ignition functionality for new keys. Applicable only to models not sold in Canada. This method assumes access to previously functional keys for initiating the system.
- Step 1: Insert an existing functional key into the ignition and turn it to the ON position for 5 seconds, then turn it OFF and remove it.
- Step 2: Within 30 seconds, insert a second working key and turn the ignition to the ON position.
- Step 3: Wait approximately 10 seconds until the immobilizer indicator begins to blink on the dashboard.
- Step 4: Once blinking starts, turn the ignition OFF and remove the second key.
- Step 5: Within 30 seconds, insert the new key and turn it to the ON position. The immobilizer light should illuminate solid for 3 seconds, then shut off—indicating success. If the indicator behaves differently, restart the sequence from Step 1.
- Step 6: Confirm that the new key can start the engine.
- Step 7: Repeat the process if programming more than one additional key. Remote Head Key – Lock/Unlock Button Programming This procedure enables the remote control functions (lock/unlock) on Remote Head Keys.
It requires a currently working remote to initiate programming mode.
- Step 1: Have all remotes ready for programming, as any not included in the session will no longer work afterward.
- Step 2: With a functional remote, press and hold UNLOCK for 4 to 10 seconds, then press and hold LOCK.
- Step 3: Release LOCK, then UNLOCK within 10 seconds. The vehicle's locks will cycle once, confirming entry into programming mode.
- Step 4: Within 60 seconds, for each remote: Press and hold LOCK and UNLOCK together for 2 seconds Release both for 1 second Press and release UNLOCK
- Step 5: The locks will cycle after each successful programming.
- Step 6: If no remotes are added within 60 seconds, the system exits programming mode automatically.
- Step 7: Test all remotes to ensure functionality. Smart Key – Remote and Engine Start Programming For vehicles equipped with a Smart Key system.
This process enables both keyless start functionality and remote button operation for a new fob.
- Step 1: Open the driver’s door and keep it open during the entire process. Avoid opening or closing any other doors.
- Step 2: Carry an already programmed Smart Key and turn the ignition to ON (do not start the engine). Begin the next step within 30 seconds.
- Step 3: Insert the new Smart Key into the designated slot, ensuring the orientation is correct.
- Step 4: On the original Smart Key, press and hold UNLOCK for 4 to 10 seconds, then press LOCK while still holding UNLOCK.
- Step 5: Release LOCK, then UNLOCK within 10 seconds of pressing LOCK.
- Step 6: With a second original Smart Key, repeat the same sequence: Hold UNLOCK for 4 to 10 seconds, press LOCK, then release both in order.
- Step 7: The immobilizer light will begin to blink on the display. When programming is complete, a buzzer will sound three times, and the immobilizer display will stay lit for 30 seconds. If a fault occurs, a 3-second error tone will sound, and the process will end.
- Step 8: To register another Smart Key, turn the ignition OFF, remove the new Smart Key, and repeat from Step 1.
