2017 BMW 4 Series – Smart Key Remote Fob Programming Instructions

Important Notice: The 2017 BMW 4 Series does not support onboard programming for smart key remote fobs. Programming must be carried out using BMW-certified diagnostic equipment by a qualified automotive technician or authorized dealership.

Programming Procedure:

  • Step 1: Verify that the replacement smart key remote fob is fully compatible with the 2017 BMW 4 Series. Using an incorrect or incompatible fob may result in failed programming or limited functionality.
  • Step 2: Arrange service with a certified technician or authorized BMW service center equipped with manufacturer-approved diagnostic tools necessary for smart key programming.
  • Step 3: Ask whether all existing remote fobs must be present during the session. In many BMW models, remotes not included during programming may be removed from the system.
  • Step 4: If the vehicle is operational, consider driving it to the service provider’s location to reduce costs associated with mobile programming appointments.
  • Step 5: At the service location, the technician will connect a diagnostic interface to the vehicle’s onboard port to access the smart key programming system.
  • Step 6: A secure programming sequence will be initiated, linking the new remote fob to the vehicle’s electronic control unit and enabling functions such as remote entry, ignition, and security.
  • Step 7: Upon completion, all remote fobs will be tested to ensure proper operation of lock/unlock, trunk release, and push-button start features (if equipped).
  • Step 8: Confirm that all remotes work correctly and store them securely before ending the session.
