2017 BMW 5 Series – Smart Key Remote Fob Programming Instructions
Important Notice: The 2017 BMW 5 Series does not support onboard programming for smart key remote fobs. Programming must be performed by a certified technician or authorized dealer using BMW-specific diagnostic tools.
Programming Procedure:
- Step 1: Verify that the replacement smart key fob is fully compatible with the 2017 BMW 5 Series. An incorrect fob may not pair correctly or may limit functionality.
- Step 2: Schedule service with a qualified technician or authorized BMW service center that has access to the manufacturer’s diagnostic software and key programming equipment.
- Step 3: Ask whether all current remotes need to be reprogrammed during the session. In many BMW systems, any fob not included may be removed from the system’s memory.
- Step 4: If the vehicle is operable, consider driving it to the service provider’s location. This may reduce costs typically associated with mobile programming services.
- Step 5: At the service center, the technician will connect a diagnostic interface to the vehicle’s onboard port to access the keyless entry system.
- Step 6: The technician will then initiate a secure programming sequence, registering the new remote fob with the vehicle’s internal systems to enable full smart key functionality.
- Step 7: After the process is complete, all remotes will be tested to ensure proper operation—including lock/unlock, trunk release, and push-button start.
- Step 8: Securely store all programmed remotes and confirm functionality before concluding the appointment.
