2017 BMW 6 Series – Smart Key Remote Fob Programming Instructions

Important Notice: The 2017 BMW 6 Series does not support onboard programming for smart key remote fobs. Programming must be completed by a certified technician or authorized dealer using BMW-specific diagnostic tools.

Programming Procedure:

  • Step 1: Verify that the replacement smart key fob is fully compatible with the 2017 BMW 6 Series. An incorrect part number or frequency may prevent the fob from being successfully programmed.
  • Step 2: Schedule an appointment with a certified technician or authorized BMW service center equipped with the proper tools and factory-approved programming software.
  • Step 3: Ask whether all existing key fobs must be present during programming. Some BMW systems require all fobs to be programmed at once—any fobs not included may be erased from memory.
  • Step 4: If the vehicle is operable, consider driving it to the service location to help reduce any additional costs associated with mobile programming services.
  • Step 5: Once at the service center, the technician will connect BMW-specific diagnostic equipment to the vehicle’s onboard data port to access the key programming interface.
  • Step 6: A secure pairing process will be initiated, allowing the new smart key fob to be registered with the vehicle’s systems. This enables all features including remote entry, engine start, and trunk access.
  • Step 7: After programming is complete, all remotes will be tested to confirm proper functionality of all supported features.
  • Step 8: Safely store the newly programmed remotes and verify full operation before concluding the session.
