2017 BMW 7 Series – Smart Key Remote Fob Programming Instructions

Important Notice: The 2017 BMW 7 Series does not support onboard programming for smart key remote fobs. Programming must be completed by a certified technician or authorized dealer using BMW-approved diagnostic equipment.

Programming Procedure:

  • Step 1: Verify that the replacement smart key fob is fully compatible with the 2017 BMW 7 Series. Using an incorrect fob model may result in programming failure or incomplete functionality.
  • Step 2: Schedule an appointment with a certified automotive technician or an authorized BMW service center that has access to the required diagnostic tools and key programming software.
  • Step 3: Confirm whether all existing smart keys must be present at the time of programming. Many BMW systems require that all fobs be reprogrammed simultaneously, or unused ones may be removed from memory.
  • Step 4: If your vehicle is in working condition, consider driving it to the service location to reduce costs that may be associated with mobile programming services.
  • Step 5: At the service facility, the technician will connect specialized BMW diagnostic equipment to the vehicle’s onboard diagnostic port to access the keyless entry system.
  • Step 6: A secure programming session will be initiated, allowing the new smart key to be registered with the vehicle's systems and enabling features such as remote locking, unlocking, trunk access, and push-button start.
  • Step 7: Once the programming process is complete, all key fobs will be tested to confirm they function correctly and that all intended features are operational.
  • Step 8: Store the programmed remotes in a secure location and verify full functionality before completing the service.
