2017 Smart Keyless Entry Remote Fob

Important Notice: The 2017 BMW X6 does not support onboard programming. Smart key fobs must be programmed using specialized diagnostic tools by a certified technician or authorized dealer.

  • Step 1: Identify whether you're replacing a missing remote or adding a new one. In most cases, all key fobs must be reprogrammed during the same session to ensure proper synchronization.
  • Step 2: Schedule an appointment with a certified automotive technician or authorized dealer who has the required BMW-compatible diagnostic equipment.
  • Step 3: Take all working remotes with you. Remotes not present at the time of programming may be erased from the system and rendered inactive.
  • Step 4: If the vehicle is operable, driving it to the service provider is often more affordable than arranging mobile service.
  • Step 5: If no functional remotes are available, be prepared to provide official proof of ownership—such as your vehicle registration or title—before programming begins.
  • Step 6: The technician will connect professional diagnostic tools to the vehicle’s onboard system to access the key programming interface.
  • Step 7: The new smart key will be electronically registered to the vehicle, allowing it to control locking, unlocking, and ignition functions.
  • Step 8: After the programming is complete, the technician will verify remote functionality by testing door locks, ignition start, and proximity features.
  • Step 9: Test the remote yourself to confirm that all features—such as panic alarm, trunk release, and keyless entry—operate as expected.
  • Step 10: If multiple remotes are being programmed, each must be added during the same session, usually within 30 seconds of the last, to ensure full system integration.
