Programming Guide for 2017 Smart Keyless Entry Remote Fob – CTS

(Smart Key System Only)

Important Information Before You Begin: This procedure applies only to vehicles equipped with a Smart Key system. All transmitters to be programmed must be present during setup. The vehicle must be fully turned off before starting. In Canada, two recognized remotes are required for transmitter programming. The system supports programming of up to eight remote fobs.

Programming with Two Recognized Transmitters: Use this method if you have two valid, previously programmed transmitters available.

  • Step 1: Confirm that the vehicle is turned off.
  • Step 2: Remove the mechanical key from both recognized transmitters.
  • Step 3: Place both recognized transmitters in the cupholder.
  • Step 4: Remove the cap covering the key lock cylinder on the driver’s door handle.
  • Step 5: Insert the key into the lock cylinder and turn it to the unlock position five times within 10 seconds.
  • Step 6: The Driver Information Center (DIC) will display: “Ready for Remote #2, 3, 4, etc.”
  • Step 7: Open the center console, remove the rubber mat, and insert the new transmitter into the transmitter pocket with the buttons facing forward.
  • Step 8: Press the ENGINE START/STOP button. When learned, the DIC will prompt for the next remote.
  • Step 9: Remove the transmitter from the pocket and press either the unlock or lock button to confirm operation.
  • Step 10: To program additional remotes, repeat Steps 7 through 9.
  • Step 11: Once all remotes are programmed, press and hold the ENGINE START/STOP button for 12 seconds to exit programming mode.
  • Step 12: Reinsert the mechanical key into its corresponding transmitter.

Programming Without Recognized Transmitters: If no previously programmed remotes are available, follow this longer method to program up to eight transmitters.

Important Notes: This procedure requires three 10-minute timed security cycles. Not supported on Canadian-market vehicles. All transmitters must be present throughout the procedure.

  • Step 1: Ensure the vehicle is powered off and all remotes are with you.
  • Step 2: Remove the mechanical key from the new transmitter.
  • Step 3: Remove the key lock cylinder cap from the driver’s door handle.
  • Step 4: Insert the key and turn it to the unlock position five times within 10 seconds.
  • Step 5: The DIC will display: “Remote Learn Pending, Please Wait.”
  • Step 6: Wait approximately 10 minutes until prompted with: “Press Engine Start Button to Learn.”
  • Step 7: Press the ENGINE START/STOP button. The display will return to “Remote Learn Pending, Please Wait.”
  • Step 8: Repeat Steps 6 and 7 two additional times (three 10-minute cycles total).
  • Step 9: After the final cycle, the DIC will display: “Ready for Remote #1.”
  • Step 10: Open the center console, remove the rubber mat, and insert the new transmitter into the pocket with buttons facing forward.
  • Step 11: Press the ENGINE START/STOP button. The DIC will confirm when the remote has been successfully paired.
  • Step 12: Remove the remote and press the unlock or lock button to test.
  • Step 13: Repeat Steps 10 through 12 for each additional remote.
  • Step 14: After all transmitters have been programmed, press and hold the ENGINE START/STOP button for approximately 12 seconds to complete the process.
  • Step 15: Reinsert the mechanical key into its remote housing.
