Programming a Smart Key Remote for 2017 Lincoln MKX

Important: This procedure is used to program an additional smart key for a 2017 model equipped with push-button start. It requires two valid smart keys that are already programmed to the vehicle. The system supports a maximum of four smart keys. Ensure the vehicle is off and all doors are closed. Follow each step in order. If performed incorrectly, wait at least 10 seconds before trying again. Read through all instructions before beginning. This process must be completed manually and will not work with fewer than two working keys.

Smart Key Programming Steps:

  • Step 1: Ensure the ignition is off and all vehicle doors are completely closed.
  • Step 2: Open the lid of the center floor console to access the backup key slot.
  • Step 3: Take the first programmed smart key and place it into the slot. The key should be oriented with the buttons facing the rear of the vehicle and the key ring pointing upward.
  • Step 4: Press the push-button ignition once (do not press the brake pedal).
  • Step 5: Wait approximately five seconds.
  • Step 6: Press the ignition button again to turn the system off.
  • Step 7: Remove the first smart key from the slot.
  • Step 8: Within 10 seconds, insert the second programmed smart key into the backup slot in the same orientation.
  • Step 9: Press the ignition button once.
  • Step 10: Wait another five seconds.
  • Step 11: Press the ignition button again to power off the vehicle.
  • Step 12: Remove the second smart key from the slot.
  • Step 13: Wait five seconds, then insert the unprogrammed smart key into the slot in the same position.
  • Step 14: Press the ignition button once. If successful, the system will recognize the new key and automatically add it.
  • Step 15: Remove the newly programmed key from the slot.
  • Step 16: Test the new key by locking and unlocking the vehicle using the remote buttons.
  • Step 17: Confirm that the vehicle starts using the newly added key.
  • Step 18: If the programming attempt fails, wait 10 seconds, then restart the process from Step 1.
