2017 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport – Keyless Entry Remote Fob & Smart Key Programming Instructions

A. Remote Head Key System Important Notice: To program a new remote head key using the onboard method, you must have two previously programmed and functioning keys. If fewer than two are available, this procedure cannot be completed using the vehicle alone.

Programming the Ignition Key Portion:

  • Step 1: Insert the first working key into the ignition and turn it to the “ON” position (do not start the engine). Leave it in this position for approximately 5 seconds.
  • Step 2: Turn the ignition switch to the “LOCK” position and remove the key.
  • Step 3: Within 30 seconds, insert the second working key and turn it to the “ON” position.
  • Step 4: Wait about 10 seconds until the immobilizer warning light begins to blink on the dashboard.
  • Step 5: Once the light starts blinking, turn the ignition to “LOCK” and remove the key.
  • Step 6: Within 30 seconds, insert the new, unprogrammed key into the ignition and turn it to the “ON” position. This step must be completed while the immobilizer light is still blinking.
  • Step 7: If programming is successful, the immobilizer light will stay on for 3 seconds, then turn off. If the light turns off prematurely or does not illuminate, the programming failed.
  • Step 8: To program additional keys, repeat Steps 1 through 7 for each one. Programming the Remote Lock/Unlock Buttons:

Note: This process only programs the remote control features. The ignition function must already be programmed.

  • Step 1: Gather all remotes (both working and new) that you wish to program.
  • Step 2: Using a currently working remote, press and hold the UNLOCK button for 4 to 10 seconds.
  • Step 3: While holding the UNLOCK button, press and hold the LOCK button.
  • Step 4: Within 10 seconds, release the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons in sequence. The door locks will cycle (lock and unlock), indicating the system has entered programming mode. All remotes except the one just used will now be erased from memory.
  • Step 5: Within 60 seconds, program each additional remote by doing the following: Press and hold both the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons for 2 seconds Release both buttons for 1 second Press and release the UNLOCK button
  • Step 6: If programming is successful, the doors will lock and unlock again to confirm.
  • Step 7: Repeat Step 5 for each additional remote within the 60-second programming window.
  • Step 8: If no further remotes are added within 60 seconds, the system will exit programming mode automatically.
  • Step 9: Test all remotes to ensure proper functionality.

B. Smart Key System Important Notice: Onboard programming of Smart Keys requires two already programmed and functioning Smart Keys. If fewer than two are available, this method will not be usable.

Smart Key Programming Steps:

  • Step 1: Open the driver’s door and keep it open throughout the process. Do not operate or open any other doors during programming.
  • Step 2: Carry the first working Smart Key and turn the ignition to the “ON” position without starting the engine. Begin the next steps within 30 seconds.
  • Step 3: Insert the new, unprogrammed Smart Key into the key slot in the correct direction as shown in your vehicle’s manual.
  • Step 4: With the first Smart Key, press and hold the UNLOCK button for 4 to 10 seconds. Then press and hold the LOCK button while still holding UNLOCK.
  • Step 5: Release the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons in sequence within 10 seconds of pressing the LOCK button.
  • Step 6: With the second Smart Key, repeat the same sequence: Hold the UNLOCK button for 4 to 10 seconds Press and hold the LOCK button Release both buttons in sequence within 10 seconds
  • Step 7: The immobilizer light in the multi-information display will begin to blink. When programming is complete, the buzzer will sound three times and the immobilizer icon will remain on for approximately 30 seconds.
  • Step 8: If programming fails, a continuous tone will sound for 3 seconds, and the procedure will be canceled.
  • Step 9: To program an additional Smart Key, turn the ignition off, remove the newly added Smart Key, and repeat the steps from Step 1.
