2017 Subaru Outback Smart Key Remote Fob Programming Instructions
Important Notice: The 2017 Subaru Outback does not allow onboard programming for smart key remote fobs. All key programming must be carried out by a qualified technician using advanced diagnostic equipment.
Programming Procedure:
- Step 1: Verify that your vehicle uses a smart key system, which typically includes a push-button ignition and proximity entry features.
- Step 2: Gather any working smart key fobs currently in your possession. For security reasons, all existing keys may need to be reprogrammed during the session.
- Step 3: Arrange service with an experienced technician or authorized provider equipped with the necessary tools to perform secure vehicle key programming.
- Step 4: If the vehicle is drivable, transporting it directly to the service location may reduce service costs compared to requesting mobile assistance.
- Step 5: Provide proof of vehicle ownership, such as your registration or title. This verification step is standard before key programming can begin.
- Step 6: The technician will connect a diagnostic scan tool to the vehicle’s OBD-II port to access the electronic key system and initiate programming.
- Step 7: The new smart key fob will be programmed into the vehicle’s system. If needed, previous key fobs will be re-added to ensure all intended fobs function correctly.
- Step 8: Once the process is complete, the technician will test the new smart key for proper operation—this includes verifying lock/unlock, trunk release, and push-button start functionality.
Additional Considerations:
- Lost All Keys: If no working fobs are available, expect the process to take additional time and potentially require identity verification steps.
Key Limitations:
- Most systems support a maximum of four smart keys. Older keys may need to be deleted to register a new one.
Post-Programming Check:
- Always test the new fob thoroughly to confirm full integration before leaving the service location.
