2018 BMW 3 Series – Smart Key Remote Fob Programming Instructions
Important Notice: The 2018 BMW 3 Series does not support onboard programming for smart key remote fobs. Programming must be completed using BMW-approved diagnostic equipment by a certified automotive technician or authorized dealer.
Programming Procedure:
- Step 1: Confirm that the new smart key remote fob is fully compatible with the 2018 BMW 3 Series. Using an incorrect or incompatible fob may result in failed programming or limited function.
- Step 2: Schedule service with a certified technician or authorized BMW dealership that has access to the appropriate diagnostic tools to perform smart key programming.
- Step 3: Ask whether all previously programmed remotes need to be present during the session. In some systems, any remotes not reprogrammed at the same time may be erased from memory.
- Step 4: If your vehicle is operable, consider driving it to the service location. This can help minimize service costs compared to requesting mobile assistance.
- Step 5: At the service site, the technician will connect BMW diagnostic equipment to the vehicle’s onboard data port to initiate the programming process.
- Step 6: A secure procedure will be used to pair the new smart key with the vehicle’s electronic control system, enabling remote locking, unlocking, trunk access, and ignition functions.
- Step 7: After the process is complete, the technician will test all remote fobs to confirm that they function properly and that all features are operational.
- Step 8: Store all programmed remotes securely and verify their functionality before concluding the service session.
