2018 BMW 5 Series – Smart Key Remote Fob Programming Instructions

Important Notice: The 2018 BMW 5 Series does not support onboard programming for smart key remote fobs. All programming must be completed using BMW-specific diagnostic equipment by a certified automotive technician or authorized dealer.

Programming Procedure:

  • Step 1: Verify that the replacement smart key remote fob is designed specifically for the 2018 BMW 5 Series. Incompatible fobs may not function or communicate with the vehicle’s system.
  • Step 2: Schedule an appointment with a certified technician or BMW service center that has access to the required diagnostic tools and programming software.
  • Step 3: Ask whether all current remote fobs must be present during the session. BMW systems often remove remotes that are not included during the reprogramming process.
  • Step 4: If your vehicle is drivable, consider transporting it to the service location to avoid additional costs associated with mobile service.
  • Step 5: At the service facility, the technician will connect BMW-approved diagnostic equipment to the vehicle’s onboard data port to begin the programming process.
  • Step 6: A secure pairing sequence will be performed to register the new smart key to the vehicle’s internal systems, enabling full functionality such as remote entry, trunk access, and push-button ignition.
  • Step 7: After programming, all remotes will be tested to ensure proper operation of key functions including lock/unlock, engine start, and remote access features.
  • Step 8: Confirm that all programmed remotes work correctly and store them securely before concluding the session.
