2018 Smart Keyless Entry Remote Fob
Important Notice: The 2018 BMW X6 does not support onboard programming. A certified technician or authorized dealer must perform smart key programming using specialized diagnostic equipment.
- Step 1: Determine whether you’re replacing a lost remote or adding a new one. Most systems require all remotes to be programmed together during the same session for compatibility.
- Step 2: Schedule service with a certified technician or authorized dealer who is equipped with BMW-compatible diagnostic tools and software.
- Step 3: Bring all existing key fobs with you. Remotes not present during the session may be deleted from the system and will no longer function.
- Step 4: If the vehicle is drivable, taking it to the technician’s location may reduce programming costs compared to mobile service options.
- Step 5: If no working fobs are available, be prepared to provide valid proof of ownership, such as a vehicle title or registration, before programming can begin.
- Step 6: The technician will connect specialized equipment to the vehicle’s onboard system and access the keyless entry programming function.
- Step 7: The new remote will be securely programmed into the system, enabling it to operate functions such as door locks, ignition, and keyless start.
- Step 8: Once programming is complete, the technician will verify proper function by testing lock/unlock, engine start, and proximity entry.
- Step 9: Personally test the key fob to ensure all features—trunk release, panic alarm, and smart entry—are working as expected.
- Step 10: If programming more than one remote, all must be added within the same session, typically within 30 seconds of each other, to ensure full integration.
