Programming Guide for 2018 Keyless Entry Remote Fob (Smart Key System)
Important Notice: The 2018 Regal uses a Keyless Access smart key system. Programming options vary depending on whether you have two recognized remote keyless entry (RKE) transmitters or none. The steps below are specific to each case. Programming with Two Recognized Transmitters Use this method when you already have two working smart keys and want to add an additional one.
- Step 1: Place both recognized RKE transmitters into the transmitter storage bin, marked with a lock icon. (This bin is typically located inside the center console or armrest compartment.)
- Step 2: Remove the key lock cylinder cap from the driver’s side door handle.
- Step 3: Using the mechanical key from the new transmitter, insert it into the driver’s door lock and turn to the unlock position five times within 10 seconds. → The Driver Information Center (DIC) will display: ""Ready for Remote #3"", #4, etc.
- Step 4: Place the new transmitter into the storage bin, with the buttons facing upward.
- Step 5: Press the ENGINE START/STOP button. → When the transmitter is successfully learned, the DIC will prompt readiness for the next remote.
- Step 6: Remove the new transmitter from the storage bin and press the unlock button to confirm.
- Step 7: Repeat Steps 3–6 for any additional transmitters.
- Step 8: When all transmitters have been programmed, press and hold the ENGINE START/STOP button for 12 seconds to exit programming mode.
- Step 9: Return the mechanical key to the transmitter and reinstall the key lock cylinder cap on the door.
Programming without a Recognized Transmitter: Use this method when no smart keys are currently programmed. This procedure takes approximately 30 minutes.
- Step 1: Remove the key lock cylinder cap from the exterior driver door.
- Step 2: Insert the emergency key from the new transmitter into the driver door lock, and turn it to the unlock position five times within 10 seconds. → The DIC will display: ""Remote Learn Pending. Please Wait.""
- Step 3: Wait for approximately 10 minutes until the DIC displays: ""Press Engine Start Button to Learn."" Then, press the ENGINE START/STOP button.
- Step 4: The DIC will return to ""Remote Learn Pending."" Repeat Step 3 two more times (three 10-minute cycles total).
- Step 5: After the third cycle, the DIC will display: ""Ready for Remote #1.""
- Step 6: Place the new transmitter into the transmitter storage bin, with buttons facing upward.
- Step 7: Press the ENGINE START/STOP button. → The transmitter is now programmed.
- Step 8: Remove the transmitter from the bin and press the unlock button to confirm.
- Step 9: Repeat Steps 6–8 to program up to eight total transmitters.
- Step 10: After all transmitters are programmed, press and hold the ENGINE START/STOP button for 12 seconds to exit programming mode.
- Step 11: Insert the emergency key back into the transmitter and reinstall the key lock cylinder cap.
Additional Considerations:
Storage Bin Location: Typically under the center console or inside the armrest—refer to your owner's manual if unsure.
Max Supported Transmitters: Up to eight RKE transmitters can be programmed to this vehicle.
Battery Check: Ensure all transmitters have working batteries before programming.
Timing is Essential: Perform all steps within the specified time frames for successful programming.
System Reset: When using the “no transmitter” method, all previously learned keys are erased.
