Programming Guide for 2018 Smart Keyless Entry Remote Fob – CTS
(Smart Key System Only)
Important Information Before You Begin: These instructions apply only to vehicles equipped with a Smart Key system. All transmitters to be programmed must be available during the procedure. The vehicle must be fully turned off before beginning. Programming a new transmitter requires two recognized remotes (except when none are available and the extended method is used). A maximum of eight remotes can be programmed. Vehicles sold in Canada require dealer programming if no recognized remotes are available.
Programming with Two Recognized Transmitters: Use this method when two working transmitters are available.
- Step 1: Ensure the vehicle is off.
- Step 2: Remove the mechanical keys from both recognized remotes.
- Step 3: Place the two recognized remotes into the cupholder.
- Step 4: Remove the cap from the key lock cylinder on the driver’s door handle.
- Step 5: Insert the key into the cylinder and turn it to the unlock position five times within 10 seconds.
- Step 6: The Driver Information Center (DIC) will display: “Ready for Remote #2, 3, 4, etc.”
- Step 7: Open the center console, remove the rubber mat, and place the new remote into the transmitter pocket with buttons facing forward.
- Step 8: Press the ENGINE START/STOP button. When programming is successful, the DIC will prompt for the next remote.
- Step 9: Remove the newly programmed transmitter and press the unlock or lock button to verify functionality.
- Step 10: To program more remotes, repeat Steps 7 through 9.
- Step 11: After programming is complete, press and hold the ENGINE START/STOP button for approximately 12 seconds to exit programming mode.
- Step 12: Return the mechanical keys to their respective transmitters.
Programming Without Recognized Transmitters: Use this procedure only if no programmed remotes are currently available.
Important Notes: This method includes three timed 10-minute security delay cycles. Not supported for vehicles sold in Canada. All transmitters to be programmed must be on hand throughout the process.
- Step 1: Ensure the vehicle is turned off and all new transmitters are with you.
- Step 2: Remove the mechanical key from one of the new transmitters.
- Step 3: Remove the cap covering the key lock cylinder on the driver’s door handle.

- Step 5: The DIC will display: “Remote Learn Pending, Please Wait.”
- Step 6: Wait approximately 10 minutes until the display changes to: “Press Engine Start Button to Learn.”
- Step 7: Press the ENGINE START/STOP button. The DIC will return to “Remote Learn Pending, Please Wait.”
- Step 8: Repeat Steps 6 and 7 two more times (three cycles total).
