Programming a Smart Key Remote for 2018 Lincoln MKX
Important: This guide explains n additional smart key for vehicles equipped with push-button start. You must have two valid programmed smart keys in your possession to complete this process. The system can store up to four smart keys at a time. Ensure the ignition is off and all doors are closed. Perform all steps in sequence and within the recommended time limits. If any step is missed or done incorrectly, wait 10 seconds before restarting. Read the entire guide before beginning the procedure.
Smart Key Programming Steps:
- Step 1: Confirm the vehicle is turned off and all doors are securely closed.
- Step 2: Open the lid of the center floor console storage compartment to access the backup key slot.
- Step 3: Insert the first programmed smart key into the slot with the buttons facing the rear and the key ring pointing upward.
- Step 4: Press the ignition button once (do not press the brake pedal).
- Step 5: Wait five seconds, then press the ignition button again to turn the system off.
- Step 6: Remove the first key from the slot.
- Step 7: Within 10 seconds, insert the second programmed smart key into the same slot in the same orientation.
- Step 8: Press the ignition button once.
- Step 9: Wait five seconds, then press the ignition button again to turn the system off.
- Step 10: Remove the second key from the slot.
- Step 11: Wait five seconds, then insert the new, unprogrammed smart key into the backup slot.
- Step 12: Press the ignition button once.
- Step 13: Wait a few seconds. If successful, a message will appear on the instrument cluster confirming that the new key has been programmed.
- Step 14: Remove the newly programmed key from the slot.
- Step 15: Test the new key by pressing the lock and unlock buttons on the remote.
- Step 16: Attempt to start the vehicle using the new smart key to ensure it has full functionality.
- Step 17: If the programming fails, wait 10 seconds, then repeat steps 1 through 16.
