2018 Mitsubishi Outlander – Key Fob & Smart Key Programming Instructions
Standard Key or Remote Head Key – Engine Start Programming This procedure is used to program a key to start the vehicle. It is not supported for Canadian models. At least two previously recognized keys are required to initiate the
programming process.
- Step 1: Insert a recognized key into the ignition and turn it to the ON position for 5 seconds. Do not start the engine. Then turn the key to LOCK and remove it.
- Step 2: Within 30 seconds, insert a second functional key and turn it to the ON position.
- Step 3: After approximately 10 seconds, the immobilizer indicator light should begin to flash.
- Step 4: Once the light flashes, turn the ignition OFF and remove the second key.
- Step 5: Within 30 seconds, insert the new key and turn it to the ON position. If the immobilizer light stays on for 3 seconds and then goes off, the programming is successful. If the light does not behave as expected, repeat the procedure from Step 1.
- Step 6: Confirm that the new key starts the engine.
- Step 7: Repeat these steps if programming additional keys. Remote Head Key – Lock/Unlock Button Programming This sequence programs the lock and unlock buttons on a Remote Head Key.
A working remote is needed to begin the process.
- Step 1: Gather all remotes you plan to use. Any remotes not included in the process will be erased.
- Step 2: On a working remote, press and hold UNLOCK for 4 to 10 seconds, then press and hold LOCK while still holding UNLOCK.
- Step 3: Release the LOCK, then the UNLOCK button within 10 seconds. The vehicle’s door locks will cycle to confirm programming mode is active.
- Step 4: Within 60 seconds, for each remote: Press and hold LOCK and UNLOCK together for 2 seconds Release both buttons for 1 second Press and release UNLOCK
- Step 5: Door locks will cycle to confirm each remote is successfully registered.
- Step 6: If no remotes are added within 60 seconds, programming mode will automatically exit.
- Step 7: Test all programmed remotes to ensure full functionality. Smart Key – Programming for Push-to-Start and Remote Use This procedure adds a new Smart Key, enabling both engine start and remote lock/unlock functions. Only the driver's door should remain open during the process. Do not operate any other doors.
Smart Key Programming Steps
- Step 1: Open the driver's door and keep it open throughout the procedure.
- Step 2: Carry a functional Smart Key and turn the ignition ON (without starting the engine). Proceed to the next step within 30 seconds.
- Step 3: Insert the new Smart Key into the vehicle’s Smart Key slot in the correct orientation.
- Step 4: Using the original Smart Key, press and hold UNLOCK for 4 to 10 seconds, then press and hold LOCK.
- Step 5: Release LOCK, then UNLOCK, within 10 seconds of pressing LOCK.
- Step 6: With the second Smart Key, perform the same steps: Hold UNLOCK for 4 to 10 seconds, then press LOCK, and release both in order.
- Step 7: The immobilizer icon in the display will start blinking. If programming is successful, a buzzer will sound three times, and the immobilizer icon will stay lit for 30 seconds. If there is a problem, a continuous 3-second warning tone will be heard, and programming will stop.
- Step 8: To add another Smart Key, turn the ignition OFF, remove the key from the slot, and repeat the full process starting at Step 1.
