2018 Subaru Outback Smart Key Remote Fob Programming Instructions

Important Notice: The 2018 Subaru Outback does not support onboard programming for smart key remote fobs. All programming must be completed by a qualified technician using specialized diagnostic tools.

Programming Procedure:

  • Step 1: Ensure your vehicle is equipped with a smart key system, identifiable by keyless entry and push-button ignition.
  • Step 2: Collect all existing smart key fobs. During programming, the system may require all keys to be present to prevent deactivation of older ones.
  • Step 3: Schedule service with a certified technician or authorized provider equipped with manufacturer-grade diagnostic tools necessary for smart key programming.
  • Step 4: If the vehicle is operational, driving it to the technician’s location may reduce service costs compared to arranging mobile service.
  • Step 5: Provide proof of vehicle ownership (such as registration or title) to authorize the key programming process.
  • Step 6: The technician will access the vehicle's onboard system using a diagnostic scan tool connected to the OBD-II port. This tool is essential for securely registering the new smart key.
  • Step 7: The new fob will be electronically programmed to the vehicle. If applicable, existing keys will be re-validated during this process to maintain full functionality.
  • Step 8: The technician will confirm that the newly programmed fob operates correctly by testing functions such as locking, unlocking, trunk release, and engine start.

Additional Considerations:

  • If All Keys Are Lost: Expect additional verification steps and a longer service time if no keys are available for duplication. Maximum Key Capacity: The system can store a limited number of smart keys. If maximum capacity is reached, an older key may need to be removed. Function Check: After programming, test the new key fob to ensure all features work as intended before leaving the service location.
