2019 Toyota Prius Prime Smart Key Programming Instructions
Keyless Entry Remote Fob – Step-by-Step Procedure
Important Notice: The 2019 Prius Prime is equipped with a Smart Key System and push-button ignition. This system cannot be programmed manually through onboard procedures. Programming requires a compatible diagnostic interface and software to register new or replacement remotes.
Programming Procedure:
- Step 1: Ensure the vehicle is parked and turned off. All doors should be closed. Remove any additional smart keys from the vehicle to prevent interference during the programming process.
- Step 2: Connect an approved automotive scan tool or diagnostic device to the vehicle’s OBD-II port, which is located below the dashboard near the driver’s side footwell.
- Step 3: Without pressing the brake pedal, press the ENGINE START/STOP button twice to switch the vehicle to the “ON” position. This allows communication between the scan tool and the vehicle’s electronic control units.
- Step 4: Using the diagnostic interface, access the immobilizer or Smart Key registration menu. Choose the option labeled ""Add Smart Key"" or ""Replace Smart Key,"" depending on whether you are adding an extra remote or replacing a lost one.
- Step 5: When prompted, hold the new smart key fob against the START button or place it in the vehicle’s backup slot (if equipped). Wait for the system to recognize the key.
- Step 6: Follow the on-screen instructions from the scan tool to complete the pairing process. The vehicle may sound a confirmation tone or flash the hazard lights once the key has been successfully registered.
- Step 7: Repeat the steps to register up to four additional smart keys if needed. Make sure each key is programmed in the same session to avoid erasing prior entries.
- Step 8: Exit the programming menu through the scan tool. Turn the ignition OFF by pressing the ENGINE START/STOP button once.
- Step 9: Unplug the diagnostic tool and test the new smart key: Confirm the remote lock and unlock functions. Ensure the push-to-start ignition works correctly. Verify passive entry functions and trunk access if your model is equipped with these features.
Additional Information:
- The Smart Key System in the 2019 Prius Prime can store up to five keys. If all keys are lost, a full reset of the immobilizer system will be required before programming a new fob. Ensure the smart key has a fresh battery prior to programming. Interference from smartphones, metal objects, or other wireless devices may affect the programming process—keep the area around the key clear.
