2020 BMW 3 Series – Smart Key Remote Fob Programming Instructions
Important Notice: The 2020 BMW 3 Series does not support onboard programming for smart key remote fobs. Programming requires the use of BMW-specific diagnostic equipment and must be performed by a certified automotive technician or authorized dealer.
Programming Procedure:
- Step 1: Verify that the replacement smart key fob is specifically compatible with the 2020 BMW 3 Series. Using an incorrect or incompatible fob may prevent proper pairing with the vehicle’s system.
- Step 2: Schedule an appointment with a certified technician or BMW dealer who has access to the necessary diagnostic tools and software required for smart key programming.
- Step 3: Ask whether any existing key fobs need to be reprogrammed during the session. In many cases, remotes not included in the session may be erased from memory.
- Step 4: If the vehicle is in working condition, consider driving it to the service location. This may reduce overall service fees compared to requesting mobile programming.
- Step 5: At the service site, the technician will connect specialized diagnostic equipment to the vehicle’s OBD-II port and access the programming menu.
- Step 6: The technician will initiate a secure process to pair the new smart key with the vehicle’s electronic systems, including entry, ignition, and security features.
- Step 7: Once programming is complete, each remote will be tested to ensure that all functions—such as lock/unlock, trunk release, and push-button start (if equipped)—are operating correctly.
- Step 8: Confirm the functionality of all programmed remotes and store them securely before concluding the appointment.
