2020 BMW 4 Series – Smart Key Remote Fob Programming Instructions

Important Notice: The 2020 BMW 4 Series does not support onboard programming for smart key remote fobs. Programming must be performed by a certified automotive technician or authorized dealer using manufacturer-approved diagnostic equipment.

Programming Procedure:

  • Step 1: Confirm that the replacement smart key fob is specifically compatible with the 2020 BMW 4 Series. An incompatible fob may fail to pair correctly or result in limited functionality.
  • Step 2: Schedule an appointment with a certified technician or BMW dealership that is equipped with the proper tools and software required for secure key programming.
  • Step 3: Ask whether all current remotes must be present during programming. In some BMW systems, remotes not included in the session may be removed from memory.
  • Step 4: If the vehicle is operational, consider driving it to the service location. This may help reduce service fees associated with mobile programming visits.
  • Step 5: At the service location, the technician will connect BMW diagnostic equipment to the vehicle’s onboard interface to begin the key programming process.
  • Step 6: A secure pairing procedure will be carried out, registering the new smart key to the vehicle’s systems—enabling features such as keyless entry, push-button start, and remote trunk access.
  • Step 7: Once programming is complete, each remote will be tested to ensure full functionality of all features, including locking, unlocking, and engine start (if equipped).
  • Step 8: Store all programmed remotes securely and verify their operation before concluding the service.
