2020 Smart Keyless Entry Remote Fob
Important Notice: The 2020 BMW Z4 does not support onboard programming. Smart key remotes must be programmed using manufacturer-specific diagnostic tools by a certified technician or authorized dealer.
- Step 1: Determine whether you’re replacing a lost smart key or adding an additional one. Most systems require all remotes to be reprogrammed together in a single session.
- Step 2: Contact a qualified technician or authorized dealer equipped with BMW-compatible diagnostic tools to perform the programming.
- Step 3: Bring all existing key fobs with you. Remotes not present during the programming session may be removed from the system and will no longer function.
- Step 4: If the vehicle is in working condition, driving it to the technician’s location may reduce service costs compared to requesting a mobile appointment.
- Step 5: If no functional remotes are available, be prepared to present official proof of vehicle ownership—such as a registration or title—before programming can begin.
- Step 6: The technician will connect factory-grade diagnostic equipment to the vehicle’s onboard system to access the smart key programming interface.
- Step 7: The new smart key will be electronically registered with the vehicle, enabling functions such as locking, unlocking, and engine start.
- Step 8: Once the remote is programmed, the technician will verify key operation by testing core features including keyless entry and ignition.
- Step 9: Personally test all remote features such as trunk release, proximity unlocking, and panic alarm to confirm everything is functioning properly.
- Step 10: If multiple remotes are being added, they must be programmed during the same session, typically within a short window, to ensure proper synchronization.
