Programming Guide for 2020 Keyless Entry Remote Fob (Smart Key System)

Overview: The 2020 Regal is equipped with a Keyless Access system. Depending on your situation, you can program additional remote keyless entry (RKE) transmitters using one of two methods: With two recognized transmitters With no recognized transmitters available Programming with Two Recognized Transmitters Use this method when two working RKE transmitters are available and you want to add another.

  • Step 1: Place both recognized transmitters into the designated storage bin, identified by a lock icon. (This bin is typically located under the center console cupholder or inside the armrest compartment.)
  • Step 2: Remove the key lock cylinder cap from the driver’s side door handle.
  • Step 3: Using the mechanical key from the new transmitter, insert it into the driver’s door lock and turn it to the unlock position five times within 10 seconds. → The Driver Information Center (DIC) will display: “Ready for Remote #3”, #4, etc.
  • Step 4: Place the new transmitter into the storage bin with the buttons facing up.
  • Step 5: Press the ENGINE START/STOP button. → When the transmitter is accepted, the DIC will prompt readiness for the next remote.
  • Step 6: Remove the new transmitter and press the unlock button to confirm programming.
  • Step 7: Repeat Steps 3–6 to program any additional transmitters.
  • Step 8: After all desired transmitters are programmed, press and hold the ENGINE START/STOP button for 12 seconds to exit programming mode.
  • Step 9: Reinsert the mechanical key into the transmitter and reinstall the key lock cylinder cap on the door.

Programming Without a Recognized Transmitter: Use this method when no transmitters are currently programmed. This procedure requires approximately 30 minutes.

  • Step 1: Remove the key lock cylinder cap from the exterior driver door.
  • Step 2: Use the mechanical key to turn the driver door lock to the unlock position five times within 10 seconds. → The DIC will display: “Remote Learn Pending. Please Wait.”
  • Step 3: Wait 10 minutes until the DIC displays: “Press Engine Start Button to Learn.” Then press the ENGINE START/STOP button.
  • Step 4: The DIC will return to “Remote Learn Pending.” Repeat Step 3 two additional times for a total of three 10-minute cycles.
  • Step 5: After the third cycle, the DIC will display: “Ready for Remote #1.”
  • Step 6: Place the new transmitter into the storage bin, with the buttons facing upward.
  • Step 7: Press the ENGINE START/STOP button. → The DIC will confirm the transmitter is accepted and ready for the next one.
  • Step 8: Remove the transmitter and press the unlock button to complete programming.
  • Step 9: Repeat Steps 6–8 to program up to eight transmitters total.
  • Step 10: When all desired remotes are programmed, press and hold the ENGINE START/STOP button for 12 seconds to exit programming mode.
  • Step 11: Insert the mechanical key back into the transmitter and reinstall the key lock cylinder cap.

Additional Considerations:

Transmitter Capacity: A maximum of eight RKE transmitters can be programmed to the vehicle.

Battery Check: Ensure all transmitters have functioning batteries before beginning.

Timing Matters: Steps involving the key lock and button presses must be completed within specified time limits.

Data Overwrite: When programming without a recognized transmitter, all previously learned keys will be deleted from the system.
