Programming Guide for 2020 Buick Regal Sportback Keyless Entry Remote Fob (Smart Key / Keyless Access System)

Overview: The 2020 Regal Sportback uses a Keyless Access system. Remote keyless entry (RKE) transmitters can be programmed either with two existing recognized remotes or when no remotes are currently paired. Follow the instructions below based on your situation. Programming with Two Recognized Transmitters This method is used to add a new remote when two working transmitters are available.

  • Step 1: Place both recognized RKE transmitters into the designated storage bin (marked with a lock icon). (The bin is typically located inside the center console or below the cupholder insert.)
  • Step 2: Remove the key lock cylinder cap from the driver’s door handle.
  • Step 3: Insert the mechanical key from the new transmitter into the driver’s door lock and turn it to the unlock position five times within 10 seconds. → The Driver Information Center (DIC) will display: “Ready for Remote #3”, #4, or the next available number.
  • Step 4: Place the new transmitter into the storage bin, with the buttons facing up.
  • Step 5: Press the ENGINE START/STOP button. → The DIC will confirm when the transmitter is programmed and ready for the next.
  • Step 6: Remove the transmitter from the bin and press the unlock button to confirm function.
  • Step 7: Repeat Steps 3–6 for each additional transmitter.
  • Step 8: Once all transmitters are programmed, press and hold the ENGINE START/STOP button for 12 seconds to exit programming mode.
  • Step 9: Insert the mechanical key back into the transmitter and reinstall the key lock cylinder cap.

Programming Without a Recognized Transmitter: Use this method when no remote transmitters are currently recognized. This process takes approximately 30 minutes.

  • Step 1: Remove the key lock cylinder cap from the driver’s side door.
  • Step 2: Insert the mechanical key from the new transmitter into the driver door lock, and turn it to the unlock position five times within 10 seconds. → The DIC will display: “Remote Learn Pending. Please Wait.”
  • Step 3: Wait approximately 10 minutes until the DIC changes to: “Press Engine Start Button to Learn.” Then, press the ENGINE START/STOP button.
  • Step 4: The DIC will return to “Remote Learn Pending.” Repeat Step 3 two more times (three 10-minute cycles in total).
  • Step 5: After the third cycle, the DIC will display: “Ready for Remote #1.”
  • Step 6: Place the new transmitter into the storage bin, with buttons facing upward.
  • Step 7: Press the ENGINE START/STOP button. → The DIC will confirm the transmitter is programmed and ready for the next.
  • Step 8: Remove the transmitter from the bin and press the unlock button.
  • Step 9: Repeat Steps 6–8 for each additional transmitter. Up to eight can be programmed.
  • Step 10: After all desired remotes are programmed, press and hold the ENGINE START/STOP button for 12 seconds to exit programming mode.
  • Step 11: Insert the mechanical key back into the transmitter and reinstall the key lock cylinder cap.

Additional Information:

Transmitter Limit: A maximum of eight RKE transmitters can be stored in the vehicle’s memory.

Battery Check: Ensure each transmitter has a functional battery before beginning.

Timing Requirements: Key turns and button presses must be completed within the specified timeframes for successful programming.

Erasure of Old Transmitters: If programming without a recognized transmitter, all previously stored remotes will be erased from the system.
