2020 Mitsubishi Outlander – Key Fob & Smart Key Programming Instructions

Standard Key or Remote Head Key – Ignition Key Programming Use this procedure to program a key for starting the vehicle. This method requires two previously programmed ignition keys and is not supported for vehicles sold in Canada.

  • Step 1: Insert the first recognized ignition key and turn it to the ON position (do not start the engine). Hold for 5 seconds, then turn it to the LOCK position and remove the key.
  • Step 2: Within 30 seconds, insert the second recognized key and turn it to the ON position.
  • Step 3: After approximately 10 seconds, the immobilizer warning light should begin blinking on the dashboard.
  • Step 4: When the light begins blinking, turn the second key to the LOCK position and remove it.
  • Step 5: Within 30 seconds, insert the new unprogrammed key, turn it to the ON position, and wait. If the immobilizer light stays solid for 3 seconds and then turns off, programming is successful. If the light shuts off prematurely or doesn’t activate, restart the entire process.
  • Step 6: Test the newly programmed key by starting the engine.
  • Step 7: Repeat Steps 1–6 to add additional ignition keys. Remote Head Key – Lock/Unlock Function Programming If your key includes remote lock/unlock buttons, follow this procedure to program the remote portion separately.

You’ll need one already programmed remote to begin.

  • Step 1: Have all current and new remotes ready. Remotes not included in the session will be erased.
  • Step 2: With a working remote, press and hold UNLOCK for 4–10 seconds, then press and hold LOCK while still holding UNLOCK.
  • Step 3: Release LOCK, then UNLOCK, in that order within 10 seconds. The doors should automatically lock and unlock to confirm programming mode is active.
  • Step 4: Within 60 seconds, program additional remotes by following this sequence for each: Press LOCK and UNLOCK simultaneously for 2 seconds Release both buttons for 1 second Press and release UNLOCK
  • Step 5: After each remote is programmed, the vehicle’s door locks will cycle to confirm success.
  • Step 6: If no remotes are programmed within 60 seconds, the system will exit programming mode.
  • Step 7: Test all programmed remotes to ensure functionality. Smart Key – Push-to-Start and Remote Function Programming This procedure registers a new Smart Key to vehicles equipped with push-button start. Programming requires two recognized Smart Keys. Only the driver's door should remain open throughout the procedure.

Do not operate any other doors. Smart Key Registration Process

  • Step 1: Open and keep the driver’s door open until the entire Smart Key programming process is complete.
  • Step 2: With one recognized Smart Key in your possession, turn the ignition ON without starting the vehicle. Proceed to the next step within 30 seconds.
  • Step 3: Insert the new unprogrammed Smart Key into the designated key slot, ensuring it is properly aligned.
  • Step 4: Using the first recognized Smart Key, press and hold UNLOCK for 4–10 seconds, then press and hold LOCK while continuing to hold UNLOCK.
  • Step 5: Release LOCK, then UNLOCK, in sequence, within 10 seconds.
  • Step 6: Repeat the same button sequence with the second recognized Smart Key: Hold UNLOCK for 4–10 seconds, press and hold LOCK, then release both buttons in order.
  • Step 7: Observe the immobilizer light on the multi-information display. If programming is successful, the system will sound three beeps, and the immobilizer display will remain illuminated for 30 seconds. If unsuccessful, a 3-second error tone will sound, and programming will stop.
  • Step 8: To add another Smart Key, turn off the ignition, remove the previously added Smart Key from the slot, and repeat the procedure from Step 1.
