2020 Subaru Outback Smart Key Remote Fob Programming Instructions
Important Notice: The 2020 Subaru Outback does not support onboard programming for smart key remote fobs. Programming requires advanced diagnostic tools and must be completed by a trained technician.
Programming Procedure:
- Step 1: Verify that your vehicle is equipped with a smart key system, which includes push-button start and proximity-based entry.
- Step 2: Collect all currently active smart key fobs. Some vehicles require reprogramming of all keys during the session to avoid deactivation.
- Step 3: Arrange service with a professional technician or dealer who has access to manufacturer-specific diagnostic equipment.
- Step 4: If the vehicle is drivable, consider transporting it to the technician’s location. This may reduce service fees compared to a mobile visit.
- Step 5: Have your vehicle ownership documents ready, such as a registration or title, to verify authorization for key programming.
- Step 6: The technician will connect a diagnostic scan tool to the OBD-II port of your vehicle. This tool is necessary to access the keyless entry and ignition control system.
- Step 7: The new smart key fob will be programmed into the vehicle’s system. Any existing keys may also be re-registered as part of the process.
- Step 8: After programming is completed, the technician will test all functions of the new fob, including locking, unlocking, trunk release, and engine start.
Additional Considerations:
- If No Working Fobs Exist: Expect a longer programming process and additional verification steps to prove ownership. System Capacity: The system can typically store up to four smart keys. Adding a new key may require deleting an older one. Functionality Check: Before leaving, confirm that the new fob operates all features of the vehicle without issue.
