2020 Toyota Prius Prime Smart Key Programming Instructions
Keyless Entry Remote Fob – Step-by-Step Guide
Important Notice: The 2020 Prius Prime is equipped with a proximity-based Smart Key System, which is not manually programmable using onboard methods. Programming a new or replacement fob requires diagnostic equipment to interface with the vehicle’s immobilizer and Smart Key ECU.
Programming Procedure:
- Step 1: Ensure the vehicle is in PARK and all doors are fully closed. Remove any other smart keys from the cabin to avoid interference during registration.
- Step 2: Connect a certified OBD-II diagnostic tool to the data port located under the driver’s side dashboard. Make sure the tool supports Toyota’s Smart Key System functions.
- Step 3: Without stepping on the brake, press the ENGINE START/STOP button twice to switch the ignition to the “ON” mode. This enables communication with the vehicle’s control modules.
- Step 4: Using the scan tool, navigate to the Smart Key or Immobilizer section of the menu. Select the option to ""Register New Smart Key"" or ""Add Key,"" depending on whether you’re programming an additional key or replacing a lost one.
- Step 5: When prompted, hold the new smart key against the engine START button or insert it into the vehicle’s key slot if equipped. Wait for the system to detect the key.
- Step 6: Follow the tool’s instructions to complete the pairing. Successful registration may trigger confirmation such as hazard light flashes, beeping sounds, or a display message.
- Step 7: Repeat the registration process for any additional keys—up to five smart keys can be stored in the vehicle's memory.
- Step 8: Exit the programming menu on the tool and power off the vehicle by pressing the START/STOP button once.
- Step 9: Disconnect the diagnostic tool. Test the smart key to ensure all functions work correctly: Lock and unlock the doors remotely Activate the push-to-start ignition Use hands-free access and trunk release if available
Additional Information:
- A maximum of five smart keys can be programmed to this vehicle. If all previously programmed keys are lost, a reset of the immobilizer system may be required before programming can proceed. Always use a smart key compatible with the 2020 Prius Prime's frequency and system architecture. Ensure each smart key has a fully charged battery before programming.
