2021 BMW 4 Series – Smart Key Remote Fob Programming Instructions

Important Notice: The 2021 BMW 4 Series does not support onboard programming for smart key remote fobs. Programming must be completed using BMW-specific diagnostic equipment by a certified automotive technician or authorized dealer.

Programming Procedure:

  • Step 1: Confirm that the replacement smart key remote fob is fully compatible with the 2021 BMW 4 Series. Using an incorrect or non-matching fob may prevent successful programming.
  • Step 2: Arrange service with a certified technician or BMW dealer who has access to the proper diagnostic tools and software needed for secure smart key programming.
  • Step 3: Ask whether all existing remotes need to be present during programming. In many BMW systems, fobs not included in the session may be removed from the system memory.
  • Step 4: If the vehicle is in working condition, consider transporting it to the service provider’s location to potentially reduce service charges associated with mobile programming.
  • Step 5: At the service location, the technician will connect professional diagnostic equipment to the vehicle’s onboard diagnostic port to initiate access to the programming interface.
  • Step 6: The technician will then carry out a secure pairing process to register the new smart key fob with the vehicle’s systems, enabling remote entry, ignition, and trunk access.
  • Step 7: Upon completion, each programmed fob will be tested to confirm proper operation of locking, unlocking, engine start, and other remote functions.
  • Step 8: Secure all programmed remotes and verify complete functionality before ending the appointment.
