Smart Key Remote Fob Programming Instructions for the 2021 Toyota Mirai

Important Notice: The 2021 Toyota Mirai does not support onboard programming for smart key remote fobs. All programming must be completed by a qualified technician using advanced diagnostic tools and authorized software.

Programming Procedure:

  • Step 1: Schedule an appointment with a certified automotive technician who is trained in smart key systems and has access to manufacturer-approved programming tools.
  • Step 2: Confirm the technician has experience working with hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and understands the specific key system used in the Mirai.
  • Step 3: If your vehicle is operable, consider bringing it to the technician’s service location. This may reduce service costs compared to requesting mobile assistance.
  • Step 4: Take all working smart key remotes with you. Some vehicle systems require all remotes to be present during programming to retain their functionality.
  • Step 5: At the service center, the technician will connect diagnostic equipment to the vehicle's onboard interface through the OBD-II port.
  • Step 6: The new smart key will be electronically registered to your vehicle using secure programming software designed for compatibility with the Mirai’s system.
  • Step 7: If there are any previously registered keys that are lost or no longer in use, they may be erased from the system to enhance security.
  • Step 8: After the programming process, the technician will test each remote for full functionality—this includes keyless entry, push-button start, and trunk release features.
  • Step 9: The technician may advise how many remotes the system can support and whether additional keys can be added in the future.
  • Step 10: Once the process is complete, store backup remotes in a secure location and keep a record of the programming for future reference.

Additional Recommendations:

  • If no functioning remotes are available, be ready to present proof of ownership, such as your vehicle registration or title. Periodically test all remote functions and replace batteries as needed. Keep at least one spare smart key accessible to avoid being locked out in an emergency.
