2021 Toyota Prius Prime Smart Key Programming Instructions
Keyless Entry Remote Fob – Step-by-Step Guide
Important Notice: The 2021 Prius Prime uses a proximity-based Smart Key System that cannot be programmed through manual or onboard procedures. New or replacement key fobs must be programmed using dedicated diagnostic equipment capable of accessing the vehicle’s immobilizer and Smart Key Control ECU.
Programming Procedure:
- Step 1: Ensure the vehicle is in the “PARK” position and all doors are securely closed. Remove any additional smart keys from inside the cabin to prevent signal interference.
- Step 2: Connect a Toyota-compatible diagnostic scan tool to the OBD-II port, located beneath the steering column. Confirm that the tool supports smart key programming for the 2021 Prius Prime.
- Step 3: Without pressing the brake pedal, press the ENGINE START/STOP button twice. This turns on the ignition system and allows communication with the onboard modules.
- Step 4: Use the scan tool to access the Smart Key system menu. Select “Smart Key Registration” or “Add New Key,” depending on whether you are adding or replacing a remote.
- Step 5: Follow the tool’s on-screen instructions. When prompted, hold the new smart key against the ENGINE START/STOP button or insert it into the designated slot, if equipped.
- Step 6: Wait for the system to recognize and register the key. You may hear a chime or see the hazard lights flash once registration is successful.
- Step 7: To program additional remotes, repeat the previous steps. Up to five smart keys can be registered to the vehicle’s memory.
- Step 8: Once programming is complete, exit the scan tool menu. Press the START/STOP button to turn off the ignition.
- Step 9: Disconnect the diagnostic tool and test all functions of the newly programmed smart key, including: Remote lock and unlock Push-button engine start Smart entry and tailgate access
Additional Information:
- The system accepts a maximum of five smart keys. If no working keys are available, a full reset of the immobilizer system may be required prior to programming. Ensure all smart keys used in the process have fresh batteries and are compatible with the 2021 Prius Prime frequency and chip requirements. If your vehicle displays “Key Not Detected” during programming, move the fob closer to the START button and repeat the step.
