2022 Subaru Outback Smart Key Remote Fob Programming Instructions

Important Notice: The 2022 Subaru Outback does not support onboard programming for smart key remote fobs. All key programming procedures must be carried out by a trained technician using specialized equipment.

Programming Procedure:

  • Step 1: Verify that your vehicle is equipped with a smart key system, which includes keyless entry and push-button start.
  • Step 2: Gather all current smart keys. For security reasons, some vehicles require all keys to be reprogrammed during the same session.
  • Step 3: Schedule an appointment with a qualified technician or service provider who has the proper scan tools and access to your vehicle’s immobilizer system.
  • Step 4: If your vehicle is operational, consider driving it to the service location rather than using mobile service. This may help reduce overall service charges.
  • Step 5: Bring proof of ownership such as a vehicle registration card, insurance document, or title. This is often required before programming can begin.
  • Step 6: The technician will connect a diagnostic scan tool to your vehicle’s OBD-II port, allowing access to the keyless entry control module.
  • Step 7: The new smart key fob will be securely added to the system. If required, older keys will also be cleared and reprogrammed during the same session.
  • Step 8: After programming is completed, the technician will verify full operation of the smart key, including lock/unlock, trunk access, and engine start.

Additional Considerations:

  • Lost All Keys: If no working keys are available, additional security steps may be required, and the process may take longer. Storage Capacity: The Outback’s system typically supports up to four smart keys. If the maximum is reached, older entries may need to be removed. Function Test: Before leaving the service location, confirm that all features of the newly programmed fob are working correctly.
