2023 BMW 4 Series – Smart Key Remote Fob Programming Instructions

Important Notice: The 2023 BMW 4 Series does not support onboard programming for smart key remote fobs. Programming requires the use of BMW-certified diagnostic tools and must be performed by a qualified automotive technician or authorized dealer.

Programming Procedure:

  • Step 1: Confirm that the replacement smart key fob is fully compatible with the 2023 BMW 4 Series. Using the wrong fob model or frequency may prevent successful pairing with the vehicle.
  • Step 2: Schedule an appointment with a certified technician or authorized BMW service center equipped with the necessary diagnostic software and programming tools.
  • Step 3: Ask whether all existing smart keys must be present during programming. Some BMW systems will deactivate any remotes not included in the current session.
  • Step 4: If the vehicle is drivable, consider transporting it to the technician's location to avoid additional charges typically associated with mobile programming services.
  • Step 5: At the service facility, the technician will connect BMW-specific diagnostic equipment to the vehicle's onboard diagnostic port to begin the programming process.
  • Step 6: A secure pairing sequence will be initiated to register the new smart key with the vehicle’s electronic control unit, enabling access to remote locking, unlocking, trunk release, and push-button start functions.
  • Step 7: After programming is completed, all remotes will be tested to ensure that they operate correctly and consistently across all features.
  • Step 8: Store your newly programmed remotes safely and verify full functionality before concluding the appointment.
